Even though the the revolution occurred in Paris and Versailles, it spread quickly to the countryside. Peasants believed the kings soldiers and the aristocrats would stop the revolution so they armed themselves in self defense. This resulted in a panic called the "Great Fear". The people were pacicing because the King was trying to over through the National Assembly. Small peasant uprising had been occurring since April. Peasants stormed mansions and great estates burning them down and killing hundreds. They invaded offices and burned feudal certificates and papers recording their obligations to the lords.
The great fear spread through France, this had little affect to Normandy and Britain. A lot of other regions did not support the revolution. |
